Violet Evergarden the Movie is an anime film based on the Japanese light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase.

The novel has won the grand prize in the fifth Kyoto Animation Award competition in 2014, marking the first time that any submitted work has earned the grand prize on any of its three categories, which are the novel, scenario and manga.

KA Esuma Bunko, which is the light novel imprint of the anime studio, had published three volumes of the novel series.

Netflix describes the anime film:

As the world moves on from the war and technological advances bring changes to her life, Violet still hopes to see her lost commanding officer again.

Violet Evergarden the Movie was originally scheduled to premiere in January 2020, but the production decided to delay its release because of the devastating arson attack at Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 building in July 2019 that killed 36 people and injured several others.

The anime film was then rescheduled in April last year, but was the production was forced to delay its release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The anime film has since been released in September last year, which earned a cumulative total of JP¥1,912,896,400 (about PHP868.8 million) after 13 weeks in the Japanese box office, and consistently ranked in the Top 10 in its first 11 weeks.

Taichi Ishidate, who directed the anime series, returned to work on the anime film, where he will be joined by other staff members including scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida and character designer Akiko Takase.

Yui Ishikawa reprised her role as the titular character “Violet Evergarden”.

Violet Evergarden’s television anime adaptation was aired in Japan during the Winter 2018 season, which was streamed by Netflix on a simulcast basis in select countries, including the Philippines.

The franchise then released Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll, which served as a side-story to the main storyline, in Japanese cinemas in September 2019.

The side-story anime film was initially set to screen for just two weeks, but extended to about five weeks due to public demand, which earned an accumulative total of JP¥641,980,500 (about PHP291.2 million).

The streaming platform added the anime film in April last year, just under a month after its home video release in Japan.

VIVA International Pictures, the foreign film distribution arm of VIVA Entertainment, released the spinoff film in Philippine cinemas in March 2020, but was abruptly stopped a few days later after the imposition of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spinoff film was re-released last January in select cinemas in the country.

Industry sources previously revealed to Anime Pilipinas that both the spinoff and sequel films were acquired by the film distributor for theatrical release. No word if they plan to add the anime films on their streaming platform, Vivamax.
