Hong Kong-based content distributor MediaLink Entertainment Limited has announced on Saturday that Higurashi: When They Cry anime will be part of Ani-One’s simulcast lineup for Autumn 2020.
The upcoming show will premiere on October 1, streaming every Thursdays at 11:30pm PHT, within an hour after its initial Japanese telecast.
Higurashi: When They Cry is the newest anime series based on the Japanese murder mystery visual novel by Ryukishi07 and developed by 07th Expansion, which released its first game in 2002.
The visual novel has inspired several video anime projects, two live-action films, and several manga adaptations by several artists. The upcoming anime series will be a remake of the original 26-episode anime series, which ran from April to September 2006.
The upcoming anime was originally scheduled to premiere last July, but was delayed to October due to production issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The upcoming series will be directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi, who previously worked on the slice-of-life anime Sket Dance, while Citrus scriptwriter Naoki Hayashi will handle the series composition.
Akio Watanabe, who previously worked on anime titles such as The World God Only Knows and Monogatari anime series, will handle the anime’s character designs, which will be produced by anime studio Passione.
The voice cast from previous adaptations, including Soichiro Hoshi (as Keiichi Maebara), Mai Nakahara (as Rena Ryugu), Satsuki Yukino (as Mion Sonozaki), Mika Kanai (as Satoko Hojo) and Yukari Tamura (as Rika Furude), will return to work on the new anime series.
Higurashi: When They Cry will be the third anime title lined-up to stream on MediaLink Entertainment’s Ani-One platform for Autumn 2020.
The company previously announced that they will stream the InuYasha spinoff anime Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon and I’m Standing on a Million Lives on a simulcast basis starting this October.
