Japanese newspaper Nikkei has reported that broadcaster TV Asahi is working on an anime series for the Philippine Market, titled “Barangay 143”.

The Japanese broadcaster is partnering with local animation & game developer Synergy88 to produce the series, which is set to air sometime in 2017.

According to the report, The upcoming series will tell the story of high school basketball players in Manila, which is set to air during primetime schedule, but did not indicate which network will air the upcoming show.

TV Asahi will be handling areas like Character designs and directing, while Synergy88 will be handling the scripts and production, the report added.

Nikkei also stated that there are also plans to export the program to neighboring countries in the region.

This move comes after the Overseas sales of Japanese anime only amounted to JPY19.5 billion ($192 million) in 2014, which was about 60% in its peak in 2005, below the expectations of the Japanese government’s “Cool Japan” initiative.

Collaborating with partners to reflect local partners and customs may be one way to help the industry, but also easily leap any bureaucratic hurdles in each country.
