Marlo Magtibay

Contributor
Anime Pilipinas

Marlo Magtibay is a Contributor for Anime Pilipinas, where he writes opinion pieces on his Filipino language column “Opinyon”.

He also contributes to the organization as a part of the TV Monitoring Group, monitoring any changes in Anime programming on local television.

Since the 90’s, Marlo has been an avid viewer of Japanese shows, whether it’s anime or tokusatsu titles. He became an anime fan in 1999, during the height of GMA’s Primetime anime block.

Because of his love for the fandom, he and his twin brother Carlo launched the website Magtibay Anime in 2003, which is considered the predecessor of ZEN Otaku Honbu. During that time, he also started becoming active in online message boards and discussing the latest trend in the country’s anime scene.

In 2004, Marlo was hired as a radio disk-jockey for Hot FM 101.5 San Pablo, a now-defunct radio station of Manila Broadcasting Company in San Pablo City, Laguna, where he was known by his moniker “Anime Kabayan”. He left the radio station when it folded in 2006.

In August 2005, he became one of the pillars of ZEN Otaku Honbu, together with two other co-administrators, to serve as an alternative to the popular online boards ABS-CBN Forums, which was experiencing technical problems during that time.

He also oversaw the transition of the forum into an anime news service in 2008, where he also served as “Senior Anime Correspondent” until its closure in 2014.

Currently, Marlo is the Head of Eureka Club, an Anime, Cosplay and Fandom organization based in San Pablo, Laguna, which was formed in 2014. He also serves as its events organizer and host.

He is also a part Laguna-based cosplay group LaCosTe (Laguna Cosplay Team) as its “Otaku Member” since 2013.

His deep understanding of anime and his connection to the audience are the reasons why his Filipino-language opinion columns are one of the most trusted by the community.

OPINYON: Voltes V after 40 years, Kailangan pa bang ulitin?

OPINYON: Bagong Taon, Bagong Pagkakataon(?)
