The organizers of the Asian Television Awards have announced on Wednesday the nominees for 2016 editions of the Pan-asian award giving body.

Two Japanese anime titles has been nominated in the Best 2D Animated Programme category of the 2016 Asian Television Awards, which are Kabeneri of the Iron Fortress and Sushi and Beyond.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is an anime series produced by Wit Studio, which was directed by Tetsuro Araki, who also worked in popular anime titles like Death Note, High School of the Dead and Attack on Titan. The anime series was aired on Fuji TV last April to June of this year with a total of 12 episodes.

The anime series was written by Hiroshi Seko, who also worked on the highly-popular Attack on Titan, with supervision by Ichiro Okouchi, who created the highly-popular Code Geass franchise.

The Japanese voice cast are lead by Sayaka Senbongi (“Claire Kokonoe”, Chronicles of the Going Home Club) as “Mumei” and Tasuku Hatanaka (“Yuma Tsukumo”, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal) as “Ikoma”.

Sushi and Beyond is an anime series inspired by the book “Sushi and Beyond: What the Japanese Know About Cooking” by author Michael Booth, produced by anime studio Fanworks together with NHK World TV.

Rareko, who worked on anime titles like Gakkatsu!! and Medamayaki no Kimi Itsu Tsubusu?, directed the anime series, as well as handled character designs.

The Japanese voice cast are lead by Eiji Takemoto as “Michael”, Ryou Hirohashi as “Ansger”, Yukiko Mannaka as “Emil” and “Lissen”.


Aside from the two anime titles, four animated shows were also nominated in the Best 2D Animation Programmme category, which are “George of the Jungle 2” for Cartoon Network (Singapore), “Chuck Chicken” for Disney Channel Asia (Malaysia), “Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure” for Turner Broadcasting System (India) and “Kuu Kuu Harajuku” for Network Ten, Eleven (Malaysia).


The Asian Television Awards is an annual event organized by Television Asia Plus magazine and it is the region’s “most significant and celebrated event, recognizing excellence in programming, production and performance”. The awards was launched in 1996 and is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year.

The awards comprise over 30 categories in different fields, which attracts 1,200 entries every year from different broadcasters and production houses in Asia.

The Awards Gala will be held on December 1 and 2, 2016 at Suntec Convention and Exhibition Center in Singapore.
