Last Saturday, February 21, while most Filipino anime fans are watching Sword Art Online on terrestrial network TV5, its competitor GMA Channel 07 had premiered the television specials of the popular series Magic Kaito.

The program airs Every Saturday mornings at 09:15am, right after Monsuno.

Kaito Kuroba is a normal teenage student whom loves being a magician and showing off to his classmates. His father dies in an accident 8 years prior and later finds out it was because of his fathers double life. Kaito finds out his father was a famous international criminal known as Kaitou Kid the Phantom Thief and that he was murdered by a mysterious organization for refusing to aid them in retrieving the “Pandora Gem”. He vows to prevent the organization from gaining the gem and assumes his father’s secret identity as kaitou kid. (Synopsis from Anime News Network)

Magic Kaito: Kid the Phantom Thief is the first anime adaptation of the action manga series, written & illustrated by Gosho Aoyama, which is being serialized by Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine since 1987.

The first anime adaptation was directed by Toshiki Hirano, who also worked on several titles including Magic Knight Rayearth, while screenplay was handled by Detective Conan scriptwriter Junichi Miyashita, and Masaki Sato, who worked on several Dragon Ball Z movies, handled character designs. It was produced by TMS Entertainment, and has 12 episodes.

The second anime adaptation, Magic Kaito 1412, is currently airing on Japanese television and Crunchyroll since October 2014, which is set to have 24 episodes.
