As you may already know, the sci-fi thriller anime Death Note is probably the most anticipated anime of all time — well, for Filipinos… I might add. I believe that this is the only anime that really got the rumour mill going, from GMA-7’s alleged acquisition to 24 Oras anchor Mike Enriquez alleged casting, and even the alleged ban by the MTRCB.
When the anime channel HEROtv, owned by ABS-CBN’s cable subsidiary Creative Programs, Inc., announced that they will air Death Note… All hell breaks loose.
But one thing that really grinds my gears… the timeslot. It is only airing at one time, which is Weekends at 11:00pm to 12:00am. No repeats. The reason?
I’ll admit that the Death Note series has been involved in so much controversies around-the-world, like copycat murders, suicides, and even as some sort of scare tactic, but I think the interpretation should come on that viewer’s mindset.
Also, there are other animes that has content that are equally or even more sensitive, like Shiki, Jigoku Shoujo, and High School of the Dead. All of them were aired on Cable TV without any major restrictions.
And besides, everybody knows that the program is only for mature audiences, so the use of common sense is crucial. Use your head.
Though I must admit, it will take SERIOUS BALLS if they want to air Death Note on Free TV, but I don’t think it will happen anytime soon… that fictional news about MTRCB may just become a reality.
